Founder - Marume Iwami-no kami nyudo Tessai Fujiwara-no Nagayoshi, short name - Marume Kurando. When he was 16 years old, he became a student of Amakusa Ito-no kami, owner of Amakusa-jo castle. Two years later he became a student of Kamiijume Ise-no kami Nobutsuma, famous master of Shinkage-ryu school and one of the greatest fencer of japanese history. Marume was an assistent of Kamiijume Ise-no kami, when he demonstrated his art in front of the shogun Ashikaga. In 1567 Kurando received meikyo-kaiden in Shinkage-ryu. After this he returned to the home village.
Marume Kurando combined knowledge of his teachers with magic of god Marishiten, and created his own school of bujutsu - Shinkage taisha-ryu. Later he added elements of chinese wushu, and his school received a name Taisha-ryu.
After Marume Kurando's death, chinese man Zhuan Linfan (japanese name - Den Rinbo), ex-pirat, the best student of Marume Kurando became the main teacher of martial arts in the lands of daimyo Sagara. Den Rinbo became the first commander of "special forces team" of Sagara's ninja (Sagara shinobi-gun) and the head of all spy network of this clan.
Den created a huge spy network in all Japan. Now daimyo Sagara could control secret trade with another countries (officially supressed). As an award Sagara received from shogun lands in Amakusa, later owned by emperor. Many Taisha-ryu fighters were moved there together with new manager. In addition, 24 Taisha-ryu fighters became shogun's bodyguards in Edo castle. The best prepared ninja of Sagara clan was ordered to control other ninja group, and executed this duty up to Meiji revolution.
The main secret of Taisha-ryu is technique of "hidden sword" - ura-tachi. Sources name it as "sword of the combining three bodies" (sanshin ittai-no ken). It means, that Sagara ninja usually fought in groups of three men, and used group attacks. Alone opponent hadn't possibility to defend himself from such a group attack.
Ura-tachi followers also studied fighting methods of two short swords (shoto), combat sickles, short spears (teyari). They studied throwing shurikens, halberd fencing, swimming, horseback riding, chinese hand-to-hand combat added by Den Rinbo himself (for example, in ura-tachi techniques sword strikes are combined with different kicks). But in any case, with any weapon ninja should be able to fight in group of three man. All techniques of cold weapon used throwing the blinding powder-metsubushi to opponent's eyes.
